The book takes place shortly before the events of Dead Space, but (from the sound of it) shortly after the events of Dead Space: Martyr. There's the novel, Dead Space: Martyr; the graphic novel, Dead Space: Salvage, and the animated feature, Dead Space: Aftermath. As someone who loved the first game and is currently playing through the second, I found Martyr to be a great stop gap between games and an interesting look back into the world of Dead Space.
